To know or not to know the genomic sequence of a fetus

To know or not to know the genomic sequence of a fetus, by Christian Netzer, Dagmar Schmitz & Wolfram Henn published in Nature Review Genetics, October 2012.

Groundbreaking technical advances have opened the door for whole-genome analysis in prenatal genetic diagnosis (PND)1, and recently the proof-of-principle has been provided that non-invasive reconstruction of the entire fetal genome from a maternal blood sample is feasible2, 3, 4. From an ethical point of view, this new situation calls for a fundamental re-evaluation of the rights and principles that are involved in PND5.
